The Husband's Secret Daughter

The Husband's Secret Daughter

On a dim, damp autumn day, Chloe glanced back at her parents' grave one last time before walking away. Many years had passed since she had left her small hometown...

Having said her piece and tidied the headstones of her loved ones, the woman hurried toward the last train. It would carry her back to an empty apartment where she would once again spend her days lying face-down in a pillow, weeping.

Soon, Chloe sat in a train compartment, watching the scenery flash by the window. At the next station, a traveling companion entered—a young girl, her eyes red from crying.

Wishing to offer even a small comfort, Chloe struck up a conversation. She was utterly shocked when she discovered who this poor, sad little angel sitting across from her actually was.

***

Back then, Chloe was a young twenty-year-old girl, looking at Mark with pure adoration as he sat in the empty concert hall of the local community center, playing the piano. It felt wonderful to be his chosen one; even though he was much older, he loved her so deeply, practically carrying her in his arms. It amazed her that such a star performer—a winner of many competitions—had noticed her, an ordinary girl from a tiny town where he had come to perform. She had waited for him at the exit with flowers, but he ended up giving them to her instead, inviting her for a simple walk along the waterfront.

They had been dating for three months since then. Their meetings weren't frequent, as he traveled often, but Chloe waited for the days he could spend with her with a fluttering heart. Especially today, as she had wonderful news for Mark: she had been pregnant for nearly a month.

The girl couldn't wait to share this joyful event with her beloved. Immediately after his rehearsal, she approached him, hugged him tenderly, and told him everything. But it wasn't the reaction she expected. Mark's face twisted into a grimace of pain. He looked at her with loathing and said:

"Chloe, this wasn't the deal. I'm a well-known man in these circles. I don't need problems. What will my fans say when they find out I have a child on the side?"

"But we can get married! I love you so much," the girl replied, sobbing.

"You have to understand, marriage is nowhere in my plans. I need to grow creatively. A wife and a child could put an end to my career. You must have an abortion, and then I can keep seeing you. If that doesn't happen, then I'm sorry, my dear, but I will never acknowledge your child."

The conversation that day ended in disaster. Chloe ran home in hysterics and cried all night. In the morning, she made the biggest mistake of her life—she had the abortion. It didn't bring her what she wanted, nor did it help her win Mark back; he categorically decided to sever all ties with her. The most terrible part was what the doctors told her: due to complications from the procedure, she would never be able to have children again. At the time, that verdict felt like a bolt from the blue, but Chloe gritted her teeth against the resentment and pain and kept moving forward. Even before meeting Mark, she had worked as a nurse's aide at the hospital; as a poor orphan, she had no one to help her, so she had to work while simultaneously studying at nursing school. With her teeth clenched, battered by fate and perpetually somber, the girl walked ahead down the long road of life.

***

Years passed. After finishing school, Chloe got a job at the same hospital, in the pediatric ward. One day, a little boy was admitted with a severe cold, and his father stayed with him. After Chloe gave the child an injection and he fell asleep crying in his father's arms, she started talking to the man.

"Why are you the one staying with the child? It's unusual; you rarely see a father taking such care of his children."

Smiling, David—that was the man's name—replied:

"Maybe I'd be the kind of father you're talking about, but I don't have that luxury. I'm raising Jimmy alone. It just so happened that he has no mother. To provide a normal life for him, I have to work two jobs. There's no time left for my son at all; it's a good thing we have nice neighbors who look after him. You know how the job market is in our town, and the wages are tiny, so I have to hustle."

Chloe looked at the young man with sympathy, seeing that he too had already faced serious trials. While Jimmy was in treatment, the young people became very close friends. They were bonded by the fact that they were both essentially orphans; David had a mother, but as soon as he became an adult, she lost all interest in his life, especially after he settled down with the mother of his child. Even her death hadn't softened the woman's cold heart; she didn't want to see her son, let alone help with her grandson.

Now, every day during her breaks, Chloe would come to their ward, where they talked for hours about everything in the world. When it was time for them to be discharged, Chloe's heart was uneasy; a hidden longing took root in her soul. She didn't want to part with David, and she had grown attached to the little boy with all her heart. David seemed to read her mind. He came to her with a large bouquet of flowers; Chloe could barely hold back tears of emotion when David, holding his son, invited her over for a "welcome home" celebration. She accepted the invitation with joy, and that evening they were devouring chocolate cake and chatting happily.

Time went by, and soon the two began to realize that what bound them was not just friendship, but love. They looked at each other with adoration, afraid to admit their feelings, until one day after her shift, the phone at the nurse's station rang.

David told her anxiously that he and his son desperately needed her help—it was a matter of life and death. Chloe rushed to the single father's house immediately; she didn't know what to think, her mind racing with worry. Out of breath, she reached the house and rang the bell. When David opened the door, he realized he had laid it on a bit too thick over the phone; the girl was so terrified. Stepping inside, Chloe immediately saw a festive table set with candles. Jimmy sat there, dressed up, and only then did the confused girl notice that David was also wearing a suit. Still not guessing what was happening, Chloe sighed with relief—everyone was alive and well, and that was the main thing.

David invited Chloe to the table. He hesitated for a long time to start the conversation, but Jimmy helped. The boy looked at his father and whispered:

"Dad, come on, why are you being quiet?"

David smiled and, taking his son's hand solemnly, held out an engagement ring and finally asked the girl to be his wife. And Jimmy, in his simple and charmingly childish way, looked at her with his bright eyes and said:

"Auntie Chloe, will you be my mommy?"

The girl couldn't possibly turn down such a double proposal, as she had long since realized she loved both Jimmy and David. From then on, true happiness entered the family. They never even cast an unkind glance at each other during all that time, so much did they cherish their feelings and their love. And meanwhile, fifteen years had passed.

David, Chloe, and Jimmy now lived in Chicago. Chloe worked successfully as a doctor at a private pediatric center, and her husband had started a construction business in which he had achieved great success. It seemed like a true idyll—peace and grace. Nothing could interfere with their happiness. Or so they thought, until one incident turned their lives upside down.

One warm summer day, David was returning home after a hard day's work. He was in high spirits, having just secured a major contract to build a massive shopping mall. He intended to celebrate with his family, but as he approached the house, he noticed a girl crying on a bench. She looked no older than twenty—the same age as his son. Concerned, like a true gentleman, David asked what had happened. Raising her tearful eyes to him, the girl sobbed:

"I came to the city to find work. But I was robbed at the station. I lost the key to my locker, and when I went back, it was empty. All my things and money were gone. Now I don't know what to do. I can't go back to my parents like this; they'll just say I'm such a klutz and can't be trusted with anything."

After talking for a bit with the girl, whose name was Julia, David unexpectedly learned she was from a small town neighboring the one where he and his wife were born and raised. Moved by the poor girl's story, he remembered how he himself had lived in hardship and grief for many years. David felt sorry for the young beauty and offered his help.

"Don't be sad; this too shall pass. The world isn't without good people. I want to help you. Let's go to the police station and file a report. I don't think it'll be hard to track down the thief since there are cameras everywhere at the station."

The girl was still too young and naive to think that any ulterior motive could hide behind good intentions, so she gladly accepted. And so they did.

While Julia was filling out the report, David watched her with interest. He completely forgot that his wife and grown son were waiting for him at home. Wild thoughts entered his graying head; he had never allowed such things before and had always been faithful to Chloe, but now it was like some kind of spell. He sympathized with the girl, but he looked at her as an object of desire, noting her flawless figure, her beautiful thin lips, and her wide, kind eyes. His gaze slid down her elegant neck, moving lower and lower.

When they left the police station, David realized he didn't want to let this beautiful nymph go. She had enchanted him with her youthful innocence and beauty.

"Listen, where were you planning to stay?" he asked caringly.

"Actually, I haven't thought about that yet, especially now that I have no money at all."

Julia began to cry again. Then David made her another offer, which ultimately became his fatal mistake. He offered to pay for a rental apartment for her, and she could pay him back whenever she could. Wishing to hide the truth about the theft from her parents, Julia agreed. She was pure and innocent and did not know what might be hidden behind the mask of a noble man. From then on, David began to live a double life. For a time, he hid the fact that he was married from his new lover. Julia fell head over heels in love with this kind, gallant suitor who had helped her so much. Slowly, he made her miss his company and his beautiful words and compliments, and eventually, he drew her into his bed. By then, it was too late to change anything; the girl loved the man too much, and even after learning he was married, she hoped David would soon leave his wife and live only with her. Soon, she found out she was pregnant.

When she told David the news, she hoped he would immediately break up with his wife, especially since Chloe had never been able to bear him a child. But David kept stalling, finding various excuses. Chloe began to notice oddities in her husband's behavior. David became somewhat cold toward her and often stayed late at work. Vague suspicions crept into the woman's soul; she suspected her husband was cheating, but she remained silent, not daring to make such accusations against the man she loved and trusted implicitly.

Seven months passed. One day, Chloe, loaded with shopping bags at the mall, ran into an old friend she hadn't seen in years. Forgetting everything else, the women went to chat at a local café, where they spent several hours talking. As they were saying goodbye, the friend suddenly remembered:

"Oh, I actually saw your David. He came into my bank with a girl; she was quite far along in her pregnancy. They were chatting nicely and hugging. I actually thought you had a son, but it looks like a daughter."

"Yes, a daughter," was the only thing Chloe said to her friend.

Suddenly, without saying goodbye, she walked out of the café. Her friend watched her go for a long time, not understanding what had happened. At home, Chloe interrogated her husband until he finally confessed that he had been cheating on her for several months with a young girl who was pregnant with his child. Shocked by such audacity, the woman threw David out the door, sobbing and refusing to listen to any excuses. Her heart was shattered. For the second time in her life, she had been bashed by the betrayal of a man she loved.

***

Finally, Julia's dream came true: her beloved now belonged only to her. She spent her days chirping happily by his side, but with each passing day, David became sadder and sadder. The whole world seemed bleak to him now. He thought only of his wife and how despicably he had betrayed her, of the pain he had caused. He thought of his son, who had stopped speaking to him when he found out about the betrayal, and that made his heart doubly heavy. Looking at Julia, David realized she was a complete stranger to him. He had been infatuated with a young girl, passion had flared, but he truly loved only his wife. He longed for her and desperately wished he could turn back time.

He thought a thousand times about his betrayal. Furthermore, everything he had, he owed to Chloe; back then, she was the one who had instilled faith and hope for the future in him when he was just a young man. The changes in David didn't escape Julia's eyes. She tried to talk to him about it many times, but the man only remained silent. What could he say? The girl realized he loved his wife and missed her and his son, and Julia could only shed bitter tears in secret.

On the day of the unexpected meeting on the train, Julia had gone to visit her parents. They lived in the neighboring town where Chloe was from. She had told them everything honestly, but her father and mother didn't accept her choice; they scolded her for starting an affair with a married man and for showing up at their door pregnant.

"But the main thing is, I feel like he doesn't need me. He doesn't love me; he only dreams of his wife, often saying her name in his sleep," Chloe's traveling companion sobbed. Struggling to find the words, Chloe comforted the girl as best she could, realizing this young child was not to blame for any of it.

Chloe never confessed that she was that very wife. She missed her husband terribly; her heart was breaking with pain because she still loved him. They had been happy for so many years.

Soon, Julia gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. David was very happy about his daughter's arrival, but her birth marked the end of his relationship with his young mistress. All those months, he had been blowing up his wife's phone, begging for forgiveness, but she had been adamant. Now, he decided to leave Julia as well.

"I will provide support, but I can't live like this anymore. I don't love you. Our meeting was a mistake," he said, ending the difficult conversation.

Julia, seeing nothing through her tears, heard David pack his things and, after leaving a large sum of money for her and the baby on the table, quietly walk out. At that moment, she felt a sharp pang in her chest. The girl had grown used to this constant aching pain; lately, these attacks happened often due to stress. Julia ended up in the hospital. Her parents arrived there after David informed them that their daughter was in trouble.

It was right after the conversation with her parents that Julia made a decision. She looked at the tiny bundle and realized she felt nothing for the infant. Her parents urged her to give up the baby, promising her the chance to study abroad, and she agreed. Being young and naive, she still hoped that true love—like in a fairy tale—was ahead of her, and a child would only stand in her way. That was when Julia handed the baby over to David, saying:

"You deceived me meanly and took advantage of my naivety, but that's okay. I'll manage. Thank you for the life lesson; I'll remember it for the rest of my life. Take the child; you're just as much a parent as I am. Only I was honest with you, while you were just playing. Goodbye!"

David rented an apartment for himself and the baby. Longing filled his soul; he remembered Chloe every day and night. Finally, he decided to try one more time to change everything.

***

Several months passed. Chloe was looking out the window, staring into the distance, when the silence of the apartment was suddenly broken by a sharp ring of the doorbell. The woman startled. Opening it, Chloe was shocked by what she saw. Her husband stood on the threshold with an infant in his arms. Dropping to his knees, David told her everything that had happened to him during that time, promising that Julia would never appear in their lives again. David begged for forgiveness and swore he would never again dare to betray their love. He realized how precious his wife was; only after losing her did he understand how much he loved her.

Chloe forgave him. She believed in the sincerity of his feelings and the words he said, for she still loved him very much. She accepted the little girl as her own, just as she once had his son. David never made such mistakes again. He was grateful to Chloe for giving him another chance, and they lived happily in love, harmony, and understanding.
