Annie and her father, Richard, were driving home late from the city. The world around them was pitch black, without a single streetlight to guide the way. The road wound through a dense stretch of forest, and Richard kept their speed low, wary of the treacherous curves.
Annie sat in the passenger seat, staring out into the darkness. Suddenly, on the shoulder of the road, she caught sight of a girl, no more than ten years old. She was wearing a light, flowing white dress and black patent leather sandals. Annie froze, a wave of pure terror washing over her as goosebumps prickled across her skin.
But the true horror struck as the car pulled level with the figure. The girl turned her head toward Annie, and Annie's heart nearly stopped. The girl's eyes were solid white, completely devoid of pupils. As the car moved past, Annie scrambled to check the rearview mirrors, but the road behind them was empty. The girl was gone.

After driving another few hundred yards, Annie noticed a car that had plummeted into a ditch. Paramedics and highway patrol officers were already on the scene, their flashlights cutting through the gloom. On the side of the road, Annie saw three bodies covered in white sheets—two adults and a child. Peeking out from under the smallest sheet, Annie saw them: the exact same black patent leather sandals she had seen just minutes ago on the girl standing by the woods.
