The Playboy's Regret: A Love Story

Alice's father, Robert, passed away when she was very young. She was raised entirely by her mother, Sarah. They didn't have much, and Sarah worked two jobs to make ends meet, yet Alice never felt like she was lacking anything. She did well in school and grew up to be a kind, obedient girl.

Upon graduation, following her mother's advice, Alice enrolled in a prestigious university to study finance and economics. Sarah believed that in today's world, a career in finance was highly sought after and well-paid, ensuring her daughter would never have to worry about her future. It was during her freshman year that Alice met a young man named Steve and fell head over heels for him.

Steve was the son of a wealthy businessman and lived a life of total luxury. He was popular, threw wild parties, and was known for being a bit of a player, dating several girls at once. From the moment Alice first saw him, she lost her mind. Steve saw exactly how this modest, pretty classmate would blush whenever he was near, trying her best to act indifferent while her face gave it all away. It amused him and stroked his ego. He had long grown tired of the aggressive attention from wealthy, fast-living girls who gave him whatever he wanted. Alice's modesty and innocence were refreshing. He began to pursue her seriously, and for a while, he even convinced himself he was in love. He had never experienced such a chaste courtship before; truth be told, he'd never been interested in girls like Alice until now. But Steve's ultimate goal remained the same: he was determined to win her over completely.

The unforgettable night happened right after they defended their senior theses. Playing on her trust and emotions, Steve decided to have a "serious" talk.

"Alice, we've been together for a year now. You know I have the most serious intentions for us, right?"

"Yes, Steve, I know," Alice smiled.

She trusted him with all her soul, secretly dreaming of a wedding and a happy life together.

"That's why I'm inviting you over to my place to celebrate our graduation. Will you come?"

"Of course, honey! I'd love to," she replied, clapping her hands in delight.

That evening, she put on her most beautiful dress and went to see him. Steve was waiting with a bouquet of flowers. They headed straight to his family's estate. At the door, they were met by a tall, silver-haired man. Upon seeing Alice, he broke into a wide smile.

"Hello, lovely child! Steve finally saw fit to introduce me to his choice! I'm James."

"Alice," she replied shyly, her cheeks turning bright red.

Alice hated that trait—the way she blushed so easily, allowing everyone to read her feelings like an open book. James noticed it immediately.

"How charming! It's rare to see such a sweet trait as modesty in today's youth. I'm very glad you've joined us. I'd almost given up hope that my wayward son would make a worthy choice. I was afraid he'd bring home someone as flighty as he is."

During dinner, James kept up a relaxed conversation, Steve chimed in, and Alice finally breathed a sigh of relief. Her boyfriend's father seemed kind and welcoming.

They had a wonderful evening, but toward the end of dinner, James's phone rang.

"Forgive me, I have to leave you. Work demands my presence. But please, enjoy yourselves. Steve, I won't be back until morning."

Steve saw his father out and returned to the table.

"So, what do you think of my dad?" he asked with a touch of pride.

"He's so interesting," Alice replied with a smile. "And so sweet! I liked him very much."

"Well, I'm my father's son. That means you should like me very much, too."

Steve moved his chair closer to Alice and topped off her wine. For half the night, they laughed, joked, and made plans for the future. Steve kept pouring. Alice became lightheaded, losing herself in the wine, the love, and the joy of feeling—or so she thought—so deeply loved.

***

The next morning, Alice woke up in Steve's bed with a splitting headache. As someone who didn't drink, she couldn't understand how she had let herself get so drunk. Why couldn't she remember anything? But since she was there with Steve, she assumed something significant had happened between them.

"Good morning, my love," Steve said, waking up and yawning. "What are the plans for today?"

"Good morning, Steve," she replied, avoiding his gaze. "I'm so embarrassed. I don't know what came over me."

"Love came over you! Happiness came over you!"

Steve scooped Alice up in his arms and spun her around the room. She laughed in delight. Everything was fine. Steve loved her; they would get married and live happily ever after.

But as the days turned into weeks, Steve never mentioned marriage. They still met, but less and less frequently. Having achieved his goal, Steve was losing interest. He began to feel burdened by the relationship and the talk of the future; he was being pulled back to his old friends, his old girlfriends, and the party life.

By the time Alice realized she was pregnant, Steve was barely visiting her. She decided they needed to have it out.

"Steve, what's going on? Why do we hardly see each other?"

"Alice, I'm looking for a job, maybe at my dad's firm. I just don't have a second to breathe!"

"Listen to me, Steve. The thing is... I... well, we're having a baby. I'm pregnant."

Steve went pale.

"That's impossible! That shouldn't be happening! Dammit, I don't want a kid, I'm too young. Look, Alice, why ruin both our lives? We have plenty of time for kids later. I'll give you plenty of money—just please, take care of it."

Alice was horrified by his words.

"What are you saying? Do you hear yourself? This baby is already alive! Its heart is beating! I can feel it! And you're asking me to kill it? I can't believe my ears!"

She burst into tears at his cold indifference. But Steve remained surprisingly calm, as if her pregnancy had nothing to do with him.

"If you want to have it, fine. I'll send money. Но don't count on a wedding."

In a rage, Alice ran out of his house, slamming the door. She finally saw him for the coward he was. How could she have been so wrong about his feelings?

That evening, when Sarah returned from work, she found her daughter sobbing into a pillow.

"Honey, what happened?"

"Mom, Steve left me—well, I left him. He doesn't want our baby!"

Sarah froze. "What baby? You're pregnant?"

"Yeees," Alice wailed even louder.

Sarah went quiet for a moment, processing the news, then stroked her daughter's shoulder.

"There's no use crying now. Besides, it's not good for the little one. Don't worry. We are strong women. We'll handle this somehow."

"Thank you, Mom," Alice finally smiled, deeply grateful for the support.

One day, Sarah was waiting for her daughter at the OB-GYN clinic. They had come to find out the baby's gender. When Alice walked out of the office, she looked like she'd seen a ghost. Her mother rushed to her side, sat her down, and gave her some water.

"Honey, you look pale. So, what is it? A boy?"

Alice shook her head.

"A girl then! That's wonderful!" Sarah smiled.

Alice shook her head again and suddenly burst into tears. "Not a girl... girls!"

"Okay, so twins! If we can handle one, we can handle two."

"Mom, you don't understand!" Alice stammered through the tears. "It's not twins. It's triplets..."

Sarah wrapped her daughter in a tight embrace and held her in silence. Tears rolled down Sarah's cheeks; she was shocked, yes, but her heart was overflowing with love. Her little girl was going to be a mother—to three babies at once.

When Alice told Steve over the phone that she was expecting triplets, he was terrified. He hung up and cut off all contact. Their mutual friends turned their backs on her too. Steve had told everyone he'd caught her cheating and that the children belonged to someone else. He played the part of the jilted, heartbroken lover so convincingly that everyone believed he was the victim and judged the mother-to-be.

Time passed. Alice gave birth to three beautiful, healthy baby girls. When she was discharged from the hospital, only Sarah was there to meet her with a bouquet of flowers. Alice's eyes filled with tears again; this wasn't the future she had imagined. Seeing her daughter's tears, Sarah said softly:

"Don't, honey. Don't cry. These girls are our happiness. We'll make sure they never feel alone."

Then, the grueling reality set in. Managing three infants at once was nearly impossible for the young woman. she was beyond exhausted and felt emotionally hollow. Sarah helped as much as she could. She would rush home from work, grab a quick bite, and take over with the granddaughters to give her exhausted daughter a break. At night, she'd take the girls into her room so Alice could get a few hours of sleep.

It's hard to say how long this exhausting life would have lasted, but one day, while Alice was pushing a heavy triple stroller through the park, she saw James walking toward her. He waved and approached with a friendly smile.

"It's been a long time! Good afternoon, Alice."

"Hello, James."

"Well, now, who are these wonderful little ones? Steve didn't mention a thing!"

Alice started crying again. She was tired of crying, but the tears just came on their own from pure exhaustion.

"Steve... he didn't want them."

James looked at her intently.

"Are you serious? Is my son really such a deadbeat? I tried to raise him to be a real, responsible man. I clearly failed. Anyone can see those girls are his—they have the family look. What a scoundrel!"

James decisively took the handle of the stroller and, looking at the babies with genuine affection, began to push it forward.

"Don't you worry, Alice. You won't want for anything from now on. I'll see to it. My granddaughters—and I have no doubt they are mine—will be well taken care of."

Alice invited James over to meet her mother.

"Mom, this is Steve's father, James. James, this is my mother, Sarah."

James gallantly kissed Sarah's hand, and she instantly blushed.

"So that's where Alice gets that lovely habit of blushing," James smiled. "It's a pleasure."

There was a spark of genuine interest in the man's eyes. He liked this woman, who looked elegant even in her housecoat and apron. He had lost his wife years ago and had buried himself in work, ignoring his personal life. Suddenly, he realized life was passing him by. Here were two lovely women and three wonderful granddaughters who needed him. Looking around the modest apartment, he made an immediate decision. He ordered their things to be packed and moved to his estate. He called an agency on the spot and hired a nanny to help Alice.

The women watched in amazement but didn't even think to resist. James then called his son and spoke sharply:

"Steve, all your things have been moved to your late mother's condo. You live there now. Do not visit or bother me. I am living with Alice, her mother, and my granddaughters. How could you do this, son? Well, there's no use talking; it seems nothing will melt that stone heart of yours. I'll send you a monthly allowance, and that's it. You acted despicably toward your own children. I intend to fix that injustice. They are my family now."

***

After some time living under the same roof, James made a suggestion.

"Ladies, here is the plan. Sarah, you retire and take charge of the household. I make more than enough to support this lovely battalion of women," he said with a wink. "And Alice, you can go back to work or just relax, but try to get back out there. You're young and beautiful, and you have a built-in test: if a man isn't scared off by three kids, he really loves you. So, go for it."

"He's right, honey," Sarah added. "Find a job, get out of the house. The nanny and I have the girls covered."

Alice did just that. She quickly found a job in her field. Her department was almost entirely female, with only one man in charge, David. Everyone affectionately called him "the Chief." From day one, David noticed the pretty new hire and couldn't help but single her out. The other women noticed immediately and started teasing her.

"Well, Alice, look at you. The fortress of David has finally fallen! We were wondering what kind of knockout would finally break our boss's heart."

Alice, as usual, turned beet red.

One day, David invited Alice to dinner after work. To her own surprise, she said yes. They sat at a restaurant and chatted effortlessly. They had so much in common. Suddenly, David went quiet, looking at her intently. Then, he took a breath.

"Alice, I've been watching you for a while. You're more than just a colleague to me. Would you let me take you out properly? I really enjoy being with you."

Alice gave a sad smile and looked away.

"I'm afraid that's not possible, David."

"Please, call me Dave. Why isn't it possible?"

"Dave... you see, I'm not 'available' in the way you think."

"What do you mean? You didn't list a husband on your application. Believe me, I would never have asked if... or do you have someone else you love?"

Dave was getting nervous; he was hopelessly in love with her. Alice placed her hand over his and corrected him gently.

"You misunderstood, Dave. There is no other man in my life... but I have children."

"Children?" Dave blinked.

"Yes. Three girls. Triplets."

Dave burst out laughing with pure relief.

"You really scared me! First 'a man,' then 'children'... Believe me, having children doesn't scare me at all. Now I can say it: I'm in love with you like a schoolboy. Loving one girl or four—what's the difference? Three girls sounds wonderful; I'm sure they're just as beautiful as their mother. I'm offering you my heart and my life, Alice. I won't let anyone hurt you or the girls. I'll make your lives wonderful."

***

A year passed. Dave met Sarah and James, asked for Alice's hand, and received their blessing. Having spent time with the girls almost every day, he had become deeply attached to them. He asked Alice for permission to formally adopt them. She joyfully agreed. Dave, as if afraid she might change her mind, went straight to the records office and filed the paperwork to become their legal father.

The relationship between Sarah and James was no secret either; it happened right in front of everyone. Alice had long noticed how her mother had blossomed, and she saw the devotion and love in James's eyes. She was thrilled for them. Following Dave's example, James asked Sarah to marry him, and of course, she said yes. At a family meeting, they decided to have a double wedding. The brides took over all the planning, leaving the grooms to focus on work.

The big day finally arrived. After the ceremony, the newlyweds headed to a restaurant. They decided not to invite outside guests; it was a strictly family affair. The party was in full swing when suddenly, Steve walked up to the table. He was clearly drunk.

"Ooooh, look who we have here! You guys are blinding the whole restaurant with all this 'happiness'!"

James stood up and grabbed his son by the arm. "What are you doing here, Steve? You should leave."

"I get it," Steve slurred. "I'm the odd man out at this party. But don't you think I had a hand in all this happiness?"

"What are you talking about, Steve?" Alice looked at her ex with pure distaste.

"Talking about? Me? Honey, did you forget? I'm the father of those kids. Isn't that right?"

"No," Dave replied calmly, without even standing up. "You are nobody to our family. And you don't have any children. I am their father. I always will be. So I'm warning you nicely: leave us alone."

James backed Dave up. "You're too late. There's nothing to fix. Get out."

Steve gave a mock bow. "Fine! It's not like I wanted to change diapers and wipe noses anyway! Have a nice life, newlyweds!"

He turned and stumbled toward the exit. But something about his posture had changed; the bravado was just a mask. His shoulders were shaking as if he were crying.

***

Another year went by. In the large estate where they all lived, they gathered for dinner every evening. It had become a tradition for everyone to sit at one big table: the girls, the nanny, James, Dave, Sarah, and Alice. They'd eat, share stories of their day, and talk about whatever was on their minds.

Suddenly, Sarah asked for silence.

"My dears, James and I have some wonderful, unexpected news. Our family is about to grow—we're going to be parents again!"

Alice choked on her drink and started coughing.

"Mom! Why would you do this to me?"

Sarah looked at her daughter, confused. "Honey, aren't you happy for me?"

Alice went quiet for a minute, then grinned.

"Of course I'm happy, Mom! How could you think otherwise? It's just... I wanted to be the one to break the news first! Girls, you're going to have a baby brother!"

Everyone burst into laughter, and the girls clapped their hands in joy.

Soon, the house was filled with the sounds of more children. It was a home full of life and love. Happy people don't hold onto grudges for long. Eventually, James and Alice forgave Steve. He eventually got married and started visiting on holidays with his own wife and child. Steve had changed and learned to value family; that encounter at the restaurant had been a harsh lesson. He realized that nothing in the world is more important than the people you love. While he didn't feel a fatherly bond with the girls, he was grateful that Dave had become the father they deserved. The girls adored Dave, and he cherished them as his own. Love, happiness, and joy took up permanent residence in their home, and they couldn't have dreamed of anything more.
